More than 25,000 people enjoyed historic boxing in Mexico City’s Zocalo
This Saturday, April 1, a professional boxing event was held for the first time in Mexico City’s Zócalo, which made for a historic event in the capital.
City Mayor, Miguel Angel Mancera Espinosa, attended with sports figures such as the promoter of boxing “Don” King – who was paid a tribute for his contributions to boxing – and “The Son of the Saint”, with whom witnessed the triumph of Mexican Alejandra “La Tigre” Jiménez over American Carlette Ewell in the full weight category.
More than 25 thousand people enjoyed the boxing arena installed in the Plaza de la Constitución.
In the main event, Mariana “Barby” Juárez claimed the WBC female bantamweight championship with a ten round unanimous decision over Catherine Phiri. The scorecards were 91-98, 90-99 and 92-97 to Juarez.
WBC female heavyweight champion Alejandra “La Tigre” Jiménez blew away Carlette Ewell in the first round.
Local hero Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez won by KO in three rounds over Hugo “Dinamita” Santillán to takes the WBC Youth super featherweight title.
Mexican Olympian Juan Pablo “Pivi” Romero made his professional debut with a quick KO1 over Arturo “Gladiador” López.
Jesús “Cotto” Vidales won by unanimous decision over Nery “Pantera” Saguilán to retains his national title.
In an rematch fight, Alejandro “Pájaro” Dávila won by split decision in eight rounds over Diego “Demoledor” Cruz.
Champions including Rey Vargas, Rafael Márquez, “Chiquita” González, Francisco “Bandido” Vargas, Adrián Hermandez, Ultiminio “Sugar” Ramos, Juan Carlos Salgado, Ibeth Zamora, José Luis Bueno, Edgar Sosa, Lupe Pintor, Carlos Cuadras.
This function is added to the list of important sporting events held in the country’s capital, among which are the Formula 1 and Formula E races – the latter held today at the Autodromo “Hermanos Rodríguez” -; The Guanajuato Rally, NBA games, LMB, the PGA golf tournament and UFC fights.
