Flower carpet inaugurated at Plaza de la República
The monumental Alfalfra Efímero Garden was inaugurated in Plaza de la República in Mexico City, as part of the activities of the Festival of Flowers and Gardens in the capital.
The “Döni: Walk with Flowers” carpet was made with techniques from the magical village of Huamantla, Tlaxcala, for five days by 40 carpet makers and 200 volunteers coordinated by the architect Alejandro Lira, who used about 4,500 pots.
The director of the Urban Management Agency, Jaime Slomianski, said that the Festival of Flowers and Gardens came to stay in Mexico City and that the initiative will be held each year as part of the beginning of spring.
Festival director Patricia Elías Calles said that with the event, Mexico City is at the forefront of other capitals that hold similar festivals.
The carpet of flowers made with leaves of corn measures 1,500 square meters and will be open to the public until next April 3, when plants will be offered free of charge to people coming to the Plaza de la República.
The Flowers and Gardens Festival will be held from April 28 to 30 in the Botanical Garden of the Chapultepec Forest as an initiative of the Planting with Cause Foundation.
