In the last 24 hours, Popocatépetl volcano recorded 109 low intensity exhalations accompanied by water vapor and gas, as well as nine explosions with minimum ash content.

The National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) indicated that at 2:16 am this morning a volcanotectonic earthquake was recorded and 10 minutes of low-intensity tremors were observed.

In addition, during the night there was incandescence on the crater, which increased at the moment of the exhalations.

According to their latest report, there was a continuous emission of water vapor and gas that the winds dispersed to the northeast.

Therefore, authorities asked the population not to approach the volcano, especially the crater, because of the danger of falling fragments.

Popocatépetl Volcanic Warning Semaphore is located in Yellow Phase 2, so low to intermediate explosive activity could continue, as well as mild to moderate ash rains in nearby towns.

There is also the possibility of recording pyroclastic flows and short-range mudslides, so the local authorities have requested a continuation of the 12 km safety radius that prohibit individuals within the area, and to maintain the transit between Santiago Xalitzintla and San Pedro Nexapa, via Paso de Cortés.

Cenapred asked the Civil Protection authorities to maintain their preventive procedures, in accordance with their operational plans. While the public is being asked to listen to local authorities and activity updates being released.

In case of falling ash, it’s recommended to cover your nose and mouth with a wet handkerchief. Clean eyes and throat with pure water. Use frame lenses and avoid contact lenses, in order to reduce eye irritation. Close windows and stay inside the house.
